A trip to Luxor should be by any way on the travel program, if one flies to Egypt. Ideally, one makes holiday in Hurghada. From Hurghada to Luxor it is only a few hours with the bus. Nowhere else in Egypt there are so many impressive sights as in Luxor.
Previously there was the ancient Egyptian city Waset here by the Greeks it was called Thebes. Long time, it was the capital of Egypt and religious center. Unfortunately, the city was not received. It consisted only of mud bricks. But Luxor is still worth a trip, because the stone-built temples have survived the time. Also, the necropolis and the Valley of the Kings on the other side of the Nile (now Thebes West) can be explored with a travel guide.
Excursion Luxor:
The Luxor Temple was dedicated to the god Amun. An alley (3 km long) connected it with the Karnak temple. The temple was built by Amenhotep III and Ramses II. But it was always changed and re-built. Later the temple was used as a Christian church. In the ruins of the temple yard are now small mosques. As typical for the classical temple it is surrounded by a high wall. The entrance to the temple is run by two huge statues of sitting Ramses and a large obelisk. The second obelisk, which stood there, is now in Paris at the Place de la Concorde to see.
During the pharaonic period, the Luxor temple was overcrowded with statues. The supernumerary statues were buried. Several of these artefact mines have now been discovered with great pleasure and can be seen by a trip from Hurghada to Luxor in the museum of Luxor.
